“I have nothing but the highest praise for the group of players in Ballinamore” - Mark Henry

Connacht Gold SFC Final replay reaction: Heartbreak for Ballinamore as they came agonisingly close to claiming Senior title for first time since 2021

“I have nothing but the highest praise for the group of players in Ballinamore,” Mark Henry says after final loss

Penalties have to be the hardest way to lose a final, but after over 160 minutes of football it was the only way to separate Mohill and Ballinamore who refused to go out any other way.

On the day it was a Sean Harkin spot kick that gave Mohill their first ever back to back Leitrim senior championships win, as they edged Ballinamore 4-2 on penalties.

“It's very hard to put into words how disappointed I am,” Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins manager Mark Henry told the Observer, “Disappointed for the lads. They put in a monumental effort, not just today, but all year. And just for it to end up the way it did on penalties, Look, it's really, really difficult to take after such a titanic battle.”

The loss is a hard pill for Ballinamore to swallow but Henry feels his team showed real tenacity to battle back again and again throughout the game:. “At different times today, it looked as if it was going to be Mohill's day. Coming up to the end of normal time, they were ahead. Coming up to the end of extra time, they were ahead, we managed to get it back.”

For Henry, Ballinamore put in the performance that was necessary to get the win, but it just wasn’t to be. “The boys were an absolute credit to themselves and to the club. It just came down to a stroke of luck that Mohill got in terms of the penalties and a little bit of luck that we didn't get. So, hard luck. We just need to be very proud of the boys.”

“I have nothing but the highest praise for the group of players in Ballinamore. They've been an absolute credit to work with this year. And I'm just so, so, so disappointed for them, that they didn't get their hands on the trophy today.”
