The new cathaoirleach for the Ballinamore municipal district is Fianna Fáil councillor Gary Prior

Cllr Gary Prior was delighted to take on the role of cathaoirleach at the latest Ballinamore municipal district and spoke to the Leitrim Observer about his plans for the year.

The Fianna Fáil councillor said: "I was only recently appointed a councillor but I am enjoying the experience; it's busier than I thought. Of course we had two storms to deal with, especially Storm Éowyn and the aftermath of that."

He continued that he has received many queries about community funding and "everyone wants funds from the barracks in the Keshcarrigan to Fenagh and Ballinamore childcare. We have roads, safety issues, especially around the Ballinamore area. The respite home in Carrick-on-Shannon is certainly a project that I'll be forward to pursuing to get started. We have been promised it but still have to see construction works begin. I know it was out for tender so we will be pursuing that. Also the residential care home in Fenagh. The HSE acquired that building and it was something that I worked on with the families since being elected.  I know the tender package was out and the deadline was last week and we'll be looking to see someone appointed for that and get works started. It would be great to get that up and running."

Cllr Paddy O'Rourke was appointed at Leas Cathaoirleach.

Cllr Prior concluded: "We want to get all that done and secure money for local community groups and lots more in between."

Outgoing Cathaoirleach Fine Gael Cllr Ita Reynolds-Flynn had a very productive year as Cathaoirleach and she told the Observer a bit about her time as year. "It was a very busy year  because we had our own local elections and then we had general election. Then we had the Seanad election. We are getting just getting into our own way of things now after all the changes last year. It was a very successful year and was very fulfilling and we did a lot of work and all the councillors in the Ballinamore municipal district worked very well together and we're a great team and we hope to get doing things for the betterment of Ballinamore and Drumshanbo, Carrigallen and all the Ballinamore municipal area."
