Members of Carrick-on- Shannon Active Age were given a talk and demonstration last week on a unique new patented supplement that has been proven to treat symptoms and manage Alzheimer's Disease.

The ReMind supplement which is available in all pharmacies, is a food supplement which is a nutritional support and early intervention of those with, or showing symptoms of, Alzheimer's Disease.

Professor John Nolan, Nutrition Research Centre Ireland, conducted research into age related macular degeneration.

Carotenoids are plant based nutrients with anti oxidant properties that concentrate on and target tissue in the eyes.

Having had great success in that field, the research was extended into brain health and brain function.

They found that people with high amounts of carotenoids have really good cognitive brain function and brain performance.

The findings of the research was published and working with University Hospital Waterford patients with Alzheimer's were shown to have a deficiency in those particular micro nutrients, which are plant based and have to be consumed.

The idea was to then enrich patients with Alzheimer's who were deficient in those same micro nutrients and improve the symptoms of the disease.

Professor Nolan said nutrition is important and can stop inflammation. There are certain anti oxidants in human bodies and the research examined if people were getting enough from the food they are consuming.

ReMind capsules, a combination of carotenoids, Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin 3, contain protective active ingredients that are naturally found in the brain, but decrease with age and disease.

The concept of the screening and supplement is early prevention and intervention. ReMind is scientifically formulated to support normal brain function.

West Midland Optical Healthcare is the sole distributor of the ReMind supplement in Ireland and it is widely available in all pharmacies in the country.

Carrick-on-Shannon man Eugene Matthews is the Managing Director of WMO Healthcare and he said that a free screening service will take place throughout the country from next month onwards.

He stressed that the screening is not a cure for Alzheimer's Disease and the screening simply indicates the risk factors for each person.

“We have got a plausible biological rationale that we can treat the symptoms and manage the disease,” Eugene said.

Such is the interest and attention in the screening and supplement, Eugene said they are addressing five major conferences of health care professionals this year.

Details of the screenings will be available at WMOHealthcare.com
