Breffni Crescent
Leitrim County Council has informed Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District that speed ramps will not be installed at Breffni Crescent.
At October’s meeting, Cllr Paddy Farrell called on Leitrim County Council to take immediate action to resolve the speeding of cars in Breffni Crescent, beside the Family Resource Centre.
“I ask that speed ramps or bumps be installed as the traffic has increased considerably and the residents out there have major concerns,” said Cllr Farrell
Cllr Flynn, Cllr Reynolds, Cllr Guckian and Cllr McGowan supported the motion.
“I think it’s clear with the speeding traffic coming down the hill leaving the childcare facility, that a speed bump there is badly needed before a bad accident takes place,” Cllr Reynolds commented.
Cllr Flynn commented that work is also needed at St Patrick’s Park area following concerns raised to him.
“There’s a number of issues there especially in relation to people coming out of town along the shops at Priests Lane where the footpath disappears,” Cllr Flynn said.
“Anything that could slow the traffic down, certainly will be welcomed,” added Cllr McGowan.
Councillors were told by district engineer Darragh O’Boyle that a lot of work has been done by Breffni Crescent and St Patricks Park regarding line work and signage, and because it is not a through road, speed ramps will not be installed.
He advised that people need to mind speed at their own accord.
“There are table top junctions there, footpaths and a 30 km/h speed limit. Money needs to be spent elsewhere,” he explained.
Mr O’Boyle also said that there are other opportunities through CLÁR where communities can get together and look for funding for traffic calming measures.
A reply from the Roads department explained the road is a cul-de-sac and only used by the people that live there, people who use the Family Resource Centre or people dropping their children at the crèche.
The reply further stated: “These people need to slow down and change their driving behaviour. If it persists then enforcement will need to be employed.
“In the last 12 months, the district office has carried out the following works in Breffni Crescent: junction signing, line marking, new footpaths, table top junctions, speed bars and additional road signage."
