Concerns have been raised about illegal dumping at the bottle banks near Tesco in Carrick-on-Shannon, with concerns over safety due to broken glass littering the area.

One local resident described the situation as “an accident waiting to happen.”

Despite the ongoing issue, no signage has been put in place to deter people from dumping.

A representative from Leitrim County Council acknowledged the problem, but stated that the bottle banks are Tesco’s responsibility, including their maintenance and upkeep.

“The Council will be engaging with Tesco on this matter and will remind them of their responsibilities in this regard,” a spokesperson confirmed.

At the March meeting of Leitrim County Council, it was confirmed that a total of 289 litter complaints had been received and investigated across the county in 2024.

Separately, the misuse of Council-installed litter bins in town centres has been an ongoing issue, with some individuals using them for household waste disposal.
