Rediscovering Leitrim’s waterways for Easter holidays and beyond

“What are we doing for the Easter break?”. It’s a question echoing around kitchen tables and while the usual answers might involve a trip out of the country or a visit to somewhere new, maybe this year, we take a different approach and that the best plan is right under our noses — or just beyond the back garden gate.

Because when it comes to natural beauty, outdoor fun, and things to do that don’t break the bank, Leitrim’s got something truly special: its waterways.

From the mighty Shannon to the serene stretches of the Shannon-Erne Waterway, our county is criss-crossed with lakes, rivers, and canals that are just waiting to be explored. Whether you fancy an afternoon paddle, a family cycle, a relaxing stroll or a day of fishing, there’s something here for everyone — and it’s all right on our doorstep.

Here are some activities to enjoy along our waterways this Easter break.

Walks, Waterways and Acres Lake

Start your break along the picturesque Shannon Blueway, beginning in Drumshanbo. This trail is ideal for walking or cycling and takes you across the stunning 600m floating boardwalk at Acres Lake. With level terrain, it's perfect for all kinds of users — from walkers and cyclists to buggies and scooters — as it winds its way from Acres Lake to Battlebridge Lock, near Leitrim Village.

The serene beauty of Acres Lake makes it a perfect spot for a family picnic or simply to pause and soak up the peaceful surroundings. For those looking to explore further, the trail connects with both the Drumhauver Bridge Loop Walk and the Drumleague Lock Loop Walk, offering extended adventures.

Alternatively, you can rent electric bikes in Leitrim Village and enjoy a 20km round-trip cycle to Drumshanbo and back, taking in all the highlights of the Blueway — including that spectacular floating boardwalk. Whether you're after relaxation or a full day of activity, this trail can be as laid-back or as adventurous as you like.

Cruising along the Shannon

Carrick-on-Shannon is the perfect launching point for a variety of water-based adventures along Ireland’s longest river. For a relaxing experience, the Moon River Cruise offers scenic one-hour boat tours complete with live commentary and entertainment, making it ideal for families and groups. If you’d prefer to chart your own course, Carrick Craft and Emerald Star both offer self-drive boat options, while Carrick Day Boats provide smaller motorboats for hire — giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

For those who want a more hands-on experience, there are also opportunities to rent kayaks or canoes from nearby providers, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the waterways. Whether you're after a tranquil cruise, a DIY boating experience, or a paddle-powered outing, there is something for every kind of adventurer.

Angling in Lough Allen

Renowned for its pike and trout fishing, Lough Allen offers the perfect setting for both seasoned anglers and those simply looking to relax. Whether you prefer to fish from the shoreline or take a boat out onto the water, Lough Allen’s serene surroundings — framed by hills and forests — offer a relaxing retreat. Whether you're an experienced angler or just looking to unwind, Lough Allen is the ideal place to connect with nature and enjoy some of Ireland's finest freshwater fishing.

Paddling along the Shannon Blueway

If angling is not for you, why not go paddling along the calm waters of the Lough Allen Canal, lined by trees and vibrant wildflowers, providing a serene setting for a leisurely paddle. As you head south from Drumshanbo, you’ll pass through lush landscapes and eventually reach Acres Lake.

For those seeking a more adventurous route, the canal leads to the River Shannon, where you can enjoy wide-open waters and peaceful views. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a beginner, there are guided tours available, or you can explore the trails independently.

The Leitrim Surf Company offers stand-up paddleboarding adventures, while Shannon River Adventure provides fun, family-friendly kayaking and multi-activity experiences, making paddling along the Shannon Blueway a perfect way to immerse yourself in the area's tranquil charm.

A local day out in Ballinamore

The Ballinamore Canal Walk offers people of all abilities the chance to choose from a wide range of multi-use trails (walking and cycling) which run alongside the tranquil waters of the Shannon-Erne Canal.

Starting at Ballinamore Marina, the shorter 4.5km looped trail will bring you through Lock 5 Arddrum, before looping around at Longstones and back into Ballinamore. This looped trail takes in the tranquillity of the Shannon-Erne Waterway crossing over the canal at several different points. The looped trial can be completed in either direction; with car parking spaces available at Ballinamore Marina and Lock 5 Ardrum.

While the one-way trail is longer and takes walkers from Ballyduff (Lock 7) along the Golf Links Road, through Ballinamore and onwards passing Lock 5 Ardrum finishing at Aghoo Bridge. After your time on the trail, there are plenty of options to refuel, including a great açaí bowl or coffee from Square Coffee, or lunch in Smyth’s Siopa Ó or Priors of High Street.

Exploring what’s on our doorstep

Recent research by Waterways Ireland found that people living within 40km of a waterway are 29% more likely to use and enjoy these amenities. That’s us. We’re not just near the water — we live alongside it. Yet, how often do we stop and really enjoy it?

This Easter, we have the perfect excuse to do just that. To spend less, travel less, and enjoy more. To reconnect with the places that make Leitrim such a special place to live. To explore our villages, support local businesses, and breathe in the beauty that surrounds us. So, when someone asks, “What are we doing for Easter?”, here’s your answer: We’re walking along our waterways. We’re cycling along floating paths. We’re paddling with the kids, catching fish with the grandkids, and sipping coffee by the canal. The best adventures are the ones that start close to home.
