Leitrim County Council is hosting an information event aimed at both prospective and existing property owners interested in transforming vacant and derelict properties into liveable homes across the county.
Mary Quinn, Director of Services for Housing at Leitrim County Council, noted during May’s Council meeting confirmed that an informational event was being organised as part of a broader effort to raise awareness of the Croí Cónaithe scheme – also known as the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant. This scheme is designed to help increase the reuse of idle housing stock by offering financial support for refurbishment.
The event will take place on Thursday, June 19 from 3pm to 8pm in the Landmark Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon.
Keynote speaker Hugh Wallace, award-winning architect and TV personality, will headline the event. Attendees will also have the chance to connect with experts representing the Sligo-Leitrim Energy Agency, Sustainable Energy Communities, local auctioneers, architects and lending institutions, who will share their insights on property restoration and energy efficiency.

The Leitrim Vacant Homes Team and other Council representatives will also be on hand to answer questions.
Leitrim has long struggled with a high number of vacant properties, recording the highest residential vacancy rate in Ireland last year. With a vacancy rate of 12 percent, the issue has been a recurring concern among councillors.
Many have urged the Council to take more active steps, including acquiring and restoring derelict homes.
Since its launch in 2022, the Croí Cónaithe scheme has made a noticeable impact in Leitrim. As of March 31 this year, the county has seen 239 applications, 178 approvals and 52 grants issued.

While the scheme has proved beneficial, it has also faced criticism. The grant – offering up to €70,000 for property refurbishment – is currently only payable in full after the completion of works.
Several councillors have called for the introduction of staged payments to make the grant more accessible and appealing to a wider age of applicants.
Despite this, the scheme remains as a vital initiative in bringing homes back to life in Leitrim.
