Annaghearly
Calls have been made for additional road safety measures on a road in Leitrim that has been the site of multiple car accidents.
At a meeting of the Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District, Cllr Cormac Flynn requested that safety measures be implemented at Annaghearly Cross, on roads L3409 and L3403, following another accident that occurred three weeks ago.
Acknowledging that the location is in a rural area, Cllr Flynn highlighted how busy the road is due to its proximity to St Patrick’s Church in Gowel, Kilnagross School, Kiltoghert Community Centre, and its closeness to Kilclare.
“This is where all these places intersect and it is busy,” said Cllr Flynn. “In the late 1970s there was an unfortunate fatality at the crossroads,” he added.

He informed members that there have been three accidents at this location in the past seven years requiring medical treatment, with the most recent one occurring three weeks ago, along with “countless” near misses.
While surface dressing works have been carried out on the roads, line marking has not been replaced. Cllr Flynn noted that speed is not an issue at this location, but rather the lack of sightlines and the unfamiliarity of drivers with the road.
Cllr Flynn’s motion was seconded by councillors Enda Stenson and Paddy Farrell.
A response from the Roads Department confirmed that the junction will be placed on the Low Cost Safety Scheme (LCS) list, and when approved, it will allow the department to carry out the necessary works and associated land agreements.

The response also stated that junctions with recorded incidents will receive priority on the LCS list.
