'Utterly brilliant' - legendary children's TV presenter on his visit to Leitrim

Legendary TV and radio presenter Timmy Mallett recently returned to Leitrim on his bike and has been gushing about what the county has to offer.

"Utterly, utterly brilliant," was his response on his arrival to Lough Rynn Castle where he enjoyed the luxury of the sumptuous bridal suite.

He was particulary impressed by Carrick-on-Shannon and even got to see the march in protest against rising fuel prices. "It’s got lots of things to be proud of and to celebrate and I’m delighted to have pedalled here," he said of Carrick.

Mallett, who reached the top of the charts with 'Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini', loved Carrick-on-Shannon's Costello Memorial Chapel in particular.

He has been documenting his travels on social media, and also completing some original water colours of places such as Lough Melvin and Carrick.

"I cycled through the pretty village of Dromod to the stunning working museum of the Cavan and Leitrim railway. Michael Kennedy has been lovingly collecting and restoring vintage pieces of trains, buses, planes and anything else he can lay his hands with the help of a few willing volunteers.

"He stopped work on replacing an old sleeper to show me around and give me a thrilling afternoon of fun," he said.

He also met up with Eurovision winner Charlie McGettigan, while visiting the county.

"Leitrim village is so small you could fit it in your pocket, but before you do, it has some great things to be rightly proud of... So good I awarded it a Timmy sticker!" he said.
