Sheemore
The Sheemore Heritage Trail was given the green light by elected members at this week's Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal Meeting.
The Part 8 planning was approved by all councillors. Senior Planner Bernard Greene said the council was asked to come on board with this by the community and to seek parking, access and a link trail to Leitrim Village. The council is in discussions with a new landowner about the management of people on the land.
The Heritage Officer is working with the council to identify the best trail option from the proposed car park to the monument.
Cllr Des Guckian reminded the council that an archaeological survey conducted in 1935 found a large number of remains in the area, he asked for an archeological review to be conducted.
Councillors Paddy Farrell, Sean McGowan, Thomas Mulligan and Finola Armstrong McGuire all supported the development and said it would greatly enhance tourism and walks in the county. Cllr Enda Stenson said it was great that this “iconic hill” will finally get recognised after years of work on this project.
