The district office of Leitrim County Council will explore the feasibility of erecting a light on an ESB pole at the Kivvy junction in Carrigallen.
This follows a motion was put forward by Cllr Paddy O’Rourke, highlighting the safety risks posed by the lack of lighting for pedestrians along the road.
Cllr O’Rourke told district engineer Darragh O’Boyle that he believed the Council had a responsibility to provide overhead lighting where a footpath exists.
In response, Mr O’Boyle agreed that this is generally the case, but noted that in some instances, footpaths were designed with overhead lighting in mind, but funding may have fallen short - similar to the footpath leading to Lough Rynn.
Leitrim County Council currently has funding to maintain the existing lighting stock, but not to erect new public lighting.
Mr O’Boyle noted that in some cases, a quick solution could be implemented by installing a light on top of an ESB pole to provide illumination.
A reply from the Roads department stated that the district office will investigate the possibility of erecting a light on an ESB pole in the vicinity of the junction.
