Looking back at the stories that made the news in the Leitrim Observer in 1923
A rather dramatic story of a jail escape was published on February 10, 1923 in the Leitrim Observer.
The report detailed how "between eight and nine o'clock on Wednesday night...four prisoners detained in the Courthouse Barracks, Sligo, escaped".
The prisoners cut through the bars of a cell in the basement of the barracks before climbing the railings and crossing into the street where they made good their escape.
Despite the alarm being raised the four men evaded recapture.
The report did not name all the men but did note that one, a Chris McLynn, had successfully escaped custody before.
No details on exactly how they managed to saw through the bars of their cell were provided.
