Funding a big concern for Keith as Leitrim star aims for big 2023 with Green & Gold
We're back to that time of the year where we look back and look forward at the same time and in the Observer sports department, we're no different! Or maybe we know what works as we return with our popular sports review of 2022 over the next few weeks.
Like last year, we've asked some of the county's brightest sports stars to look back over the last 12 months along with some of those journalists on the sports beat around the county.
Leitrim’s top Keith Beirne took a look back over the action packed year that came with the high of the a Tailteann Cup All-Star to the lows of a second Leitrim SFC Final defeat in a row for his native Mohill.
Highlight of the Year
Winning a Tailteann Cup All Star.
Lowlight of the Year
Losing the county final for a second year in a row
Should sport and politics/ mix?
They should be kept separate, sport is a universal game.
Personality of the Year
Team of the Year
Kerry winning the Allianz league and All Ireland Championship double.
What are the big challenges facing Leitrim sport in 2023
Funding, recent reports saw Limerick GAA surpass 2m in spending in 2022. The level of success Leitrim needs to get to will require big budgets.
Event that made me go wow in 2022
The most recent run of Morocco at the World Cup captured the hearts of nations far and wide. They showed how underdog team spirit can defeat the world class talent teams like Spain & Portugal possess.
One thing I’d do to make sport better in 2023
More and more media coverage. Players and teams deserve recognition in all levels of GAA be it a club championship game in Leitrim or a Connacht inter county championship game.
One to watch in 2023
Leitrim GAA senior football team. High promotion and Connacht final hopes means 2023 could be the closest emulation to the great 94 year football wise.
