Leitrim's task to qualify for the knockout stages of the Tailteann Cup has been simplified by the results from the other groups on Saturday meaning that all Andy Moran's side need to reach the preliminary quarter-finals is a win against Wexford in Parnell Park today (Sunday).
With Tipperary beating Waterford by a single point on Saturday, 0-17 to 1-13, it means that the Premier county are now in third place in their group with a scoring difference of minus 28 points and with Leitrim on minus 18, all they need is a single point win and they would be ahead of the Munster men to secure one of the three best third placed team spots.
Of course, the result also makes it easier for Wexford as all they now need is a draw against Leitrim and they would advance on two points as well, meaning that for both counties, today's game is a virtual knockout game in itself.
The draw for the preliminary knockout stages of the Tailteann Cup will take place on RTE Radio 1's Sunday Sport at 5.30 pm after the games with the teams that finish second over the four groups enjoying home advantage in the games scheduled to take place next weekend, June 10-11. The draw is subject to teams not meeting a team they played in the group stages.
For each of the four fixtures, a second placed team from the Group Stages will be drawn at Home to play against either New York or one of the three best third placed teams from the group stages.
The Preliminary Quarter-Final winners will move on to the Tailteann Cup Quarter-Finals (weekend of June 17-18) where each of the Group winners will have a Home Quarter Final against a Preliminary Quarter-Final winner. The draw will be presided over by CCCC Chair Derek Kent and Feargal McGill, GAA Director of Club, Player and Games Administration.
