Without kicking a ball this evening, Fenagh St Caillins booked their place in the Masonite Division 1 League Final next week when Glencar Manorhamilton beat Leitrim Gaels, a result that still wasn't enough for the north Leitrim kingpins to avoid relegation to Division 2 on the final day of the regular league season.
Fenagh St Caillins overcame Aughawillan in a must win encounter on Friday evening, winning 0-12 to 1-7, to move onto nine points although their win was overshadowed by an injury scare for Leitrim star Ryan O'Rourke. That left them on nine points and waiting on the result of Saturday's clash of Glencar Manorhamilton and Leitrim Gaels, a game that was vital for both teams.
The home team needed a win and a favour from Ballinamore to avoid the drop to Division 2 while the Gaels needed a win to set up a Final meeting against their neighbours St Mary's Kiltoghert. Glencar Manorhamilton did their part, defeating Leitrim Gaels 3-9 to 2-10 to end the Gaels hopes of a derby clash next weekend.
However, Ballinamore Sean O'Heslins were unable to complete the second half of the puzzle as a Keith Beirne inspired Mohill stormed to a 0-18 to 0-9 victory, the Leitrim star scoring 11 points while Shane Quinn also came up with a strong performance for the defending league champions.
That left Ballinamore and Manorhamilton both level on six points but in a strange twist of fate, Glencar Manorhamilton were relegated on the head to head rule as they had conceded the June 3, meeting between the counties. Ballinamore also had the marginally better scoring difference of minus nine to Glencar Manorhamilton's minus 11.
The final game of the round between leaders St Mary's Kiltoghert and the already relegated Aughnasheelin did not take place.
In Division 2, Carrigallen, like Fenagh, booked their place in the League Final thanks to a victory on Friday night. Their hard fought 1-12 to 2-8 victory away to Kiltubrid ensured they could not be caught and they are promoted to Division 1 and will take on Allen Gaels in the Final next weekend.
The Drumshanbo men suffered their first defeat of the campaign, losing out 1-11 to 0-7 at the hands of Annaduff that leaves them in fourth place, level on nine points with Ballinaglera who finished their campaign with a 2-11 to 0-1-7 win over the already relegated Aughavas.
The also relegated St Patrick's Dromahair finished their campaign with a north Leitrim derby win away to Melvin Gaels, their 3-14 to 2-7 win leaving them just a point behind their Kinlough rivals in the table.
No results available for Division 3 at the time of going to press.
