Leitrim's Aine Tighe made a spectacular start to the 2023 ALFW season as she hit two goals in Fremantle Dockers' derby win over the West Coast Eagles, one of which has seen her nominated for a rebel AFLW Goal of the Year nomination for round one.

The Kiltubrid woman was twice on the mark and the game's top scorer as the Dockers won the Perth derby 4-3 (27) to 2-7 (19) to maintain their unbeaten run against their local rivals.

Aine is up against Carlton’s Darcy Vescio and Sydney Swans’ Chloe Molloy in the round one vote with voting closing at 10 am on Thursday (Australian time). You can vote at www.afl.com.au/aflw/goal-of-the-year

Speaking to the Fremantlefc.com.au website after the game, Aine laughed about her audacious goal that has seen her nominated for the prestigious award: “I was laughing to myself as I was practicing my dribbles at captains run and it would always dribble the wrong way. It was frustrating in practice but today it went the right way.

“Tempo (Matt Templeton) our forwards coach tells us to play on instinct and to take the game on and see what opportunities present. It put it on the boot and hoped for the best.”

Tighe had words of praise for Roscommon's Joanne Cregg who made her AFLW debut: “It was such a special occasion, we were talking during the week about a lot of our first games. She’s learnt a whole new game as have a couple of us who have also come across, without the family support. It’s a challenge but she’s just cool, calm and collected. She has unbelievable work rate and an unbelievable engine.”

Aine is now looking forward to a cross country trip to take on  Collingwood next Sunday: “We’re really looking forward to the road trip. It’s our first away trip this season. We’ll embrace that and to spend the weekend together will be really exciting.”
