Sunday's highly anticipated Connacht Gold Leitrim SFC Quarter-Final between Ballinamore Sean O'Heslins and Glencar Manorhamilton was postponed minutes before it's scheduled throw-in time after an outbreak of sustained torrential rain rendered the Avant Money Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada pitch unplayable.
The rain, which started during the concluding stages of Fenagh St Caillins 1-22 to 2-3 demolition of Leitrim Gaels, grew much heavier during the break between both quarter-finals and despite both teams attempting to warm-up, undertaking some intensive drills that left the pitch heavily marked, it soon became obvious that the match could not go ahead.
Leitrim CCC officials pulled the plug on the game, a move that met with universal approval but leaves clubs and county board with a fixture backlog. The postponed game has been refixed for next Sunday September 17, with the County ground due to hold the two Smith Monumentals IFC Quarter-Finals on Saturday.
Annaduff will take on Ballinaglera in the first game at 4pm with Carrigallen facing Kiltubrid at 6pm in the Carrick venue while next Saturday will also see the Connacht Gold SFC Relegation semi-finals with Aughawillan taking on Gortletteragh in Fenagh and Aughnasheelin battling St Patrick's Droma’s
Sunday will see the Vistamed Junior A Championship Quarter-Finals with Glenfarne Kiltyclogher facing Gortletteragh in Letirim village while Annaduff and Melvin Gaels face each other in Drumkeerin, both games at 1pm.
Leitrim County Board officials also announced that the draw for the semi-finals, which would see Mohill and St Mary's Kiltoghert face Fenagh St Caillins and the winners of the postponed game, will now take place after the refixed quarter-final.
A draw, after extra-time next Sunday, could wreck havoc with the scheduling of the semi-finals as under the new bye-laws, all knockout games will go to extra time and then a replay if no victor emerges with finish on the protocols involving penalty shootouts only coming into play for replays.
