Carlow captain Darragh Foley shakes hand with Leitrim's Mark Diffley Picture: Willie Donnellan
As Leitrim players and fans were left in stunned silence on the fantastic surface in Netwatch Cullen Park last Sunday, Carlow’s players celebrated wildly with their home supporters after Colm Hulton’s dramatic injury time goal saw them snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
For captain Darragh Foley, there was added relief as an earlier missed free left the Barrowside veteran wondering if the home team had lost their chance: “To be honest, after I missed a free, I was disappointed, straight in front of the posts, I should be putting it over. Then Leitrim went down and went two ahead and I was thinking this is starting to slip away.
“But we have a bit of pace - we have a lot of pace in the team and we have good finishers. I knew we’d get one chance and thankfully he took it because our last couple of games, we haven’t got the rub of the green but today, thank God, the gods were shining on us and we came out with a one point win.”
It is a win that Carlow celebrated wildly, knowing full well that they’re back in the promotion hunt: “Absolutely delighted after last weekend and the disappointment against Laois, it was good that we bounced back to get back into the race. A win today against a very good Leitrim side is huge, it is going to bring us on leaps and bounds so delighted to get the win.
What a finish to todays game! https://t.co/2vaGQirYmC

“That is why the Leagues are the best competition in Gaelic football, we know there is nothing between the teams. We were cruising in the first half last week against Laois and we just had a capitulation and Laois got back into it.
“We wanted to prove we are as good as anybody in this Division and I felt we did, it was a great game, it could have gone either way. Leitrim got the rub of the green last week and we came out the right side today and it is onwards and upwards hopefully.”
