Leitrim sports fans will have two reasons to get up early to watch the AFLW this season after it was confirmed last week that Eilish O'Dowd was joining Aine Tighe in Australia for the coming AFLW season.

After a weekend that saw five Leitrim players on victorious teams at the Ladies third level finals  in Cork, O'Dowd's signing with the GWS Giants was the big news as the Dublin All Ireland winner and All Star nominee signed a two year deal with the Great Western Sydney club, making her the second Leitrim AFLW player after Aine Tighe with the Fremantle Dockers.

In an exclusive interview with the Leitrim Observer, Eilish revealed that Aine had been in touch with advice after she signed with the Giants: “Aine reached out to me and has made me feel very welcome on my new journey in Australia.  It’s reassuring and inspiring to see how Aine has excelled in playing AFLW.”

The Kiltubrid woman also had some advice for Eilish on how to make her mark in the game: “Aine recommended that I bring my own personal style of play to the game which will be unique to the Giants. Lots of the Irish players including Aine have reassured me that it takes time to adjust to the new rules and sport and to just enjoy the whole experience.”

On home soil, four Leitrim players were involved with victorious DCU teams in Cork, Sarah Reynolds & Leah Fox with the O'Connor Cup side, Kelly Beirne and Michaela Harte with the HEC and Lagan Cup teams while Drumkeerin's Ella McNamara was a member of ATU Sligo's Moynihan Cup winning team with Glencar Manor's Dearbhla Rooney also involved.
