A look at who is running in Sligo-Leitrim ahead of the general election

With the general election fast approaching, here is a look at the candidates we know are running in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency

general election

The general election is likely to be called before Friday this week, currently there are twelve candidates that have been announced for the Sligo-Leitrim constituency.

The list is currently dominated by Sligo candidates with the only three Leitrim natives running overall being Bláithín Gallagher (The Green Party), Martin Kenny TD (Sinn Fein), Leitrim Cathoirleach Paddy O'Rourke (Fianna Fáil).

Sinn Fein have again opted to run two candidates in the constituency after they won two seats here in 2020. Fianna Fáil have also put two candidates forward.

The list hosts three current TDs running for re-election: Marian Harkin, Frank Feighan, and Martin Kenny. While Eamon Scanlon who was put forward by Fianna Fail in recent weeks has also served as a TD, winning election in both 2007 and 2016.

It is unlikely that massive changes will come to the ticket at this late stage as the government tries to push policies through the Dáil this week ahead of calling the election.

The current crop of Sligo-Leitrim Candidates are Deputy Martin Kenny (Sinn Féin), Deputy Marian Harkin (Independent), Deputy Frank Feighan (Fine Gael), Cllr. Marie Casserly (Independent), Cllr. Michael Clarke (Independent Ireland), Cllr. Edel McSharry (Fianna Fáil), Cllr. Nessa Cosgrove (Labour Party), Chris McManus (Sinn Féin), Eamon Scanlon (Fianna Fáil), Graham Monaghan (Aontú), Michael Kelly (The Irish People), Bláithín Gallagher (Green Party).
