With the Sligo-Leitrim first preference vote count well underway, Eamonn Scanlon, Michael Clarke and Frank Feighan are vying for the top spot, but there is an interesting fight going on behind the front runners.
Chris McManus is the best of the rest currently on 13% and could still take back the top spot he occupied earlier in the day. It is going to be a fight between McManus, Edel McSharrey 9%, and sitting TD Marian Harkin 6% who looks in danger of losing her seat.
Ocean FM's exit poll last night had Chris MacManus (SF), Marian Harkin (I), Michael Clarke (II), and Edel McSharry (FF) in competition for the last Dáil seat within 2% of each other.
There is still a long way to go in the first preference count, but these candidates will need to stay as close to the top as possible before transfers start to come into play, when that time comes the second vote transfers could favour the party candidates like Edel McSharry and Chris MacManus.
Though Marian Harkin has shown a historical ability to pick up second-preference votes in the later rounds.
The counters have started with the Sligo boxes and will move on to Leitrim and South-Donegal votes later this afternoon which will likely change the look of the race.
