Funds needed to continue vital Leitrim Community Car Scheme

Concern expressed over Leitrim Community Car Scheme

Leitrim Community Car Scheme is struggling to survive and is seeking funds from the public to continue the vital service.

Leitrim Community Cars completed 350 trips last year, transporting people who live  isolated to urgent and essential medical appointments. Manager of Leitrim Volunteer Centre Josephine Stroker told the paper they bring people to medical appointments all over the country.

“We have  28 Volunteer drivers who have all been Garda vetted and trained. Our drivers are currently receiving 32 to 45 cents per kilometre and receive out-of-pocket expenses for food and parking.”

The service costs approx €20,000 a year  “which is a fraction of what taxis would cost,” commented Ms Stroker. But they are running at a loss and need urgent funds to continue the service. Josephine said, “We don't want to let anyone down, they are relying on us.” The service has also helped Ukrainians who needed to attend medical appointments last year.

The scheme is applying for Government funding, but in the meantime, they hope to raise €6,000 online through www.gofundme.com/f/leitrim-community-car-scheme
