From colcannon to céilí the Wiki Loves Folklore photography competition is celebrating culture in Ireland

Geese Herder at Virginia Show, Cavan

Wiki Loves Folklore, the photography competition that celebrates all aspects of culture and folklore internationally, is taking place in Ireland for the third edition held on the island of Ireland.

Taking place from 1 February to 30 March, it calls on photographers of all levels to upload images of our rich cultural traditions including festivals, material culture, dances, cuisine, clothing or daily life routine emphasising the traditional folk culture from all the many communities on the island of Ireland. The aim is to raise awareness of the many forms of culture and folklore in Ireland through this collection of media created by the public, that is then available to be used freely in education, tourism, and outreach.

From colcannon to céilí dancing, mummers plays to holy wells, to Chinese new year and Bhangra dancing - all aspects of culture in Ireland are welcome! Images from St Brigid’s Day celebrations, St Patrick’s Day traditions, and Seachtain na Gaeilge events could also win you prizes. By uploading your images to Wiki Loves Folklore, you will be sharing that culture with the whole world. The three winners will be announced in May 2023, having been judged by a panel of local experts.

For full details of the competition see www.wikimedia.ie  and for updates see @wikimediaIE on Twitter and Wikimedia Community Ireland’s Facebook page.

Rebecca O’Neill, Project Coordinator for Wikimedia Community Ireland commented, “Ever wondered why some local traditions are not well represented online or on Wikipedia? Wiki Loves Folklore is a great way to openly share our culture and traditions with the world.”
