An exploration of women within the Irish singing tradition at The Dock

Friday night, February 10

Enjoy the festive season at The Dock

The Dock Arts Centre, Carrick-on-Shannon

Tomorrow, Friday, February 10, The Dock is delighted to welcome three singers with diverse musical backgrounds; Fionnuala Maxwell, Aoife Hammond and Tara Baoth-Mooney, accompanied by cellist Eimear Reidy, as they explore and expound on the role of the female voice in the Irish singing tradition. Definitely put this date in your diary as it is going to be a very special night!

Maxwell, Hammond and Baoth Mooney are musicians, singers and sound artists based in Leitrim and the North West.
For this once-off multi-media interactive performance, each artist brings their own knowledge of traditional song infused with elements of their different musical perspectives.

Fionnuala Maxwell is an award-winning Traditional Irish singer, researcher, and educator, who is fiercely committed to preserving and promoting the art of Irish traditional singing by resurrecting older songs that have become almost extinct.

According to Maxwell, when she sings, she is not teaching a song; rather she is “passing it on".

While she has recorded songs for albums and sung with artists like Cathy Jordan from Dervish, Donal Lunney, and Eleanor Shanley, she has also led The Leitrim Larks Project, composed a song in celebration of the Leitrim women of Cumann na mBan, and co-founded The Guggering Bag, among other projects.

Tara Baoth Mooney is an artist, musician, and designer. When creating her clothing designs, she looks at the "hidden stories" of our lives and brings them to the surface through clothing and textiles. Her music is equally as expressive, and her evocative voice creates an almost trancelike atmosphere for the listener.

Aoife Hammond is a singer and multi-instrumentalist based in Co Leitrim. Aoife has played in numerous noise and punk bands, currently Extravision and Surge. She has composed original electronic and acoustic scores using synthesizers, bouzouki, guitars, mandolin, and vocals.

The musical practice of cellist Eimear Reidy ranges from Historical Performance Practice to Sound Art. A keen improviser, Eimear has performed with musicians such as The Quiet Club, Strange Attractor and Laura Hyland as well as many festivals and previously at The Dock.
