Drumshanbo resident knocked down by bicycle

People on scooters or cyclists should use the road and not the footpaths.

This was the message at a recent meeting of Ballinamore Municipal District where motions from both Cllr Gerry Dolan and Cllr Brendan Barry called for signs to be erected highlighting the issue.

Speaking to the Leitrim Observer, Cllr Barry said a person who was hit by a cyclist and had to go to hospital afterwards continues to live in fear that they will be struck again

Talking at the latest Ballinamore Municipal District meeting, Cllr Brendan Barry said: "They were stepping out the front door of their house onto a footpath and got struck by a person on a bicycle and ended up in hospital. Every time they are coming out of their house now they are afraid that somebody is going to come flying up on a bike."

Cllr Barry continued that it was important that cyclists and those using scooters are aware that they should be on the road and not the footpath.
"People cycling and using scooters should be on the road and should dismount the scooter or bicycle if they are going to be on the footpath especially with people coming out of shops and different things.

"There are people getting knocked down by them and I asked the Council to put up signs and have an information campaign so that people know they shouldn't be on the footpath.
"The idea with the sign is that if a person sees someone on the footpath cycling or on a scooter, they can tell them that there is a sign clearly saying that they shouldn't be doing that."
