Leitrim Greens welcome new law

Greens from Leitrim, Sligo, North Roscommon and South Donegal (North West) have welcomed the adoption of the Nature Restoration Law by MEPs in the European Parliament.

The law aims to preserve nature across the European Union and is supported by individuals, NGOs and concerned bodies throughout the EU, including Ireland.

The North West Greens took the opportunity to thank Green MEPs, Grace O'Sullivan and Ciarán Cuffe, for advocating in the European Parliament, rallying support for the Nature Restoration Law and securing the backing of all Irish MEPs in the critical vote.

Bláíthín Gallagher, Chair of the North West Greens stated: "This significant step forward in restoring nature across the European Union would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of individuals, NGOs, and concerned bodies throughout the EU and in Ireland. We express our heartfelt gratitude to all those who played a role in making this happen. Special commendation goes to our Green MEPs, Grace O'Sullivan and Ciarán Cuffe, for their tireless advocacy in the European Parliament, rallying support for the Nature Restoration Law and securing the backing of all Irish MEPs in the critical vote.

"This law represents a crucial milestone in preserving our natural heritage, fostering sustainable ecosystems, and ensuring a thriving environment for future generations. While it is understandable that certain communities may have concerns about its impact on their livelihoods, we firmly believe that seeking consensus by engaging all stakeholders in an inclusive public participation process is vital. Through transparent and honest discussions grounded in robust ecological and socio-economic evidence, we can address reservations and recognize the long-term benefits this law brings.

Johnny Gogan, Energy spokesperson and Local Electoral Area Rep for Sligo Drumcliffe said: "Let us prioritise a visionary outlook that transcends short-term interests and work together to protect our environment for a sustainable future. Our heartfelt thanks go to the MEPs who supported the Nature Restoration Law. This successful vote is not just a vote for our future; it represents a critical step towards restoring degraded ecosystems and establishing binding conservation targets. Together, we have the power to make a positive impact on our local environment while playing our part in the need for wider global restoration."

Recent polling reveals overwhelming support for this law among the Irish population, underscoring the critical importance of restoring biodiversity for the well-being of present and future generations. The North West Greens firmly reject scaremongering and disinformation that needlessly burdens and instills fear in people, including our farmers. As Green MEP Grace O'Sullivan aptly stated, "Without nature, there are no farmers, without nature, there is no food production, and without nature, our basic conditions for survival—air, water, plants, and seas—will be compromised."

Bláithín Gallagher added,

"We must unite against divisive narratives that pit urban against rural, farmers against green. Urgent action on environmental and biodiversity issues is essential for everyone's future, including farmers. Climate change has already devastated livelihoods worldwide, and as significant carbon emitters, we must take responsibility for our lifestyle choices which impact the climate and we must address the challenges of climate chaos. Together, we can forge a sustainable future where clean air, clean water, and the wonders of nature are cherished and protected. Let us continue working hand in hand to build a world where nature thrives and future generations can flourish."
