Uncertain future for group water schemes

Uisce Éireann

Uisce Éireann has not taken over water scheme

Cllr Felim Gurn said that with utility bills “gone through the roof”, group water schemes (GWS) that have not been taken over by Uisce Éireann are going to face an uncertain future.

He said that the "potential for arrears building up and the schemes being caught in limbo trying to provide water on a voluntary water scheme could see power supplies cut due to high ESB rates to power the schemes. I propose this Municipal District write to the Minister for Housing seeking clarity on how these group water schemes can be supported."

Last month, the Leitrim Observer reported that Cllr Sean McDermott raised the issue and was advised by Uisce Éireann that it does not have “the resources or staff to take this or any other group water scheme in charge in the foreseeable future.”

The Observer was also told that Glenboy/Glenfarne GWS in North Leitrim is soon to be out of funds and will shortly cease to operate meaning significant disruption to the water supply of nearly 400 households and 40 non-domestic connections – mainly farmers and businesses.

Cllr Mary Bohan supported the motion saying she felt it was “very unfair" saying they "should take the scheme over and get on with it - there's no reason why they shouldn't."
