Love Leitrim, Save Leitrim, Save Doagh Mountain and Treasure Leitrim in partnership with Slí Éileare are organising a Climate Camp just outside Manorhamilton from August 9-13 and the family friendly event will include a range of talks, workshops, walks, music and other cultural activities as well as discussions on various strategies to combat climate change.
As final preparations are carried out, one of the groups involved in this year's Climate Camp which will take place in Leitrim has renewed their calls for the public to support the event and for urgent action to be taken to tackle the climate crisis. It also follows comments by the secretary general of the United Nations António Guterres who asked for immediate action to counter the arrival of “global boiling” in an impassioned intervention as wildfires raged across the Mediterranean. New data has also indicated that July will be the hottest month on record. Referring to Climate Change Guterres said “The consequences are clear and they are tragic. Children swept away by monsoon rains. Families running from the flames. Workers collapsing in scorching heat. “The era of global warming has ended; the era of global boiling has arrived. The air is unbreathable. The heat is unbearable. And the level of fossil-fuel profits and climate inaction is unacceptable. Leaders must lead. No more hesitancy. No more excuses. No more waiting for others to move first. There is simply no more time for that.”.
Love Leitrim Chairperson Jamie Murphy said “The comments by the United Nations Secretary General and flooding and wildfires across Europe and other parts of the world are a stark reminder, if one was needed, of the crisis we are facing. We have also seen the British government grant hundreds of new fossil fuel licenses in recent days. We need to take action on a local, national and international level if we are to have any hope of a sustainable, liveable, future for this and the next generation. We would encourage anyone that wants to be part of the solution to tackling the climate crisis to come to the camp for what promises to be a great week. https:// climatecampireland.ie/
