Local Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan has received confirmation that the Department of Children will no longer contract two student accommodation properties in Sligo Town.
The Department of Children was due to contract Benbulben Court Apartments at Clarion Road and Milligan Court Apartments at Connaughton Road for International Protection Applicants.
Deputy Feighan said: "I have been working with Atlantic Technological University to ensure the student accommodation is not lost for the new academic year.
"I am pleased to confirm Minister Simon Harris has received confirmation from Minister O'Gorman that neither property will be contracted. This follows significant engagement between the two Ministers, and I really want to thank them both for their work.
"There will now be ongoing engagement between ATU, the Department and the developer to ensure these properties are now available to students this academic year.
"The loss of these properties would have been catastrophic for the student population. Today is a good step forward”, concluded Deputy Feighan.
