Call for expansion of car park at Carrick railway station

Call for expansion of car parking at Carrick railway station

Carrick-on-Shannon Railway Station

There are no suitable lands available for car park expansion at Carrick-on-Shannon Railway Station according to Iarnród Éireann.
Despite this statement from the national railway network, Cllr Sean McGowan welcomed the fact they were willing to engage with the local community and local bodies and he hopes to see progress on it.
Cllr McGowan raised the issue at the latest Carrick-on-Shannon municipal district meeting on Monday last.
He had put forward a motion last May that they would write to Iarnród Éireann in relation to car park expansion at the railway station.
Iarnród Éireann's response was it has identified Carrick-on-Shannon as a priority station for car park expansion within the Iarnród Éireann National Car Park Strategy.
“Land within Iarnród Éireann’s ownership is not available or suitable for car park expansion, therefore engagement has taken place with local landowners with a view to agreeing a suitable site for car park expansion.
“Unfortunately, our engagements have concluded that no suitable lands are available for car park expansion.
“Should Roscommon County Council have suitable lands available, or should the Council be in a position to acquire suitable lands, Iarnród Éireann will engage constructively to progress a car park expansion scheme at this location.”
Cllr McGowan welcomed that the national railway network had said they were willing to engage “and work along with the local community and bodies so I would hope that they would. I would hope that we would see progress on it.”
