Deputy Martin Kenny
Sinn Féin TD for Sligo Leitrim Martin Kenny has called for clarity from the HSE and Minister for Health in light of the recent review into the use of unauthorised devices at Temple Street Children’s Hospital. It emerged earlier this week that an external review has now been extended to all paediatric orthopaedic services across the country.
Speaking today, Teachta Kenny said, “This is exceptionally worrying for families, who are already dealing with difficulties in accessing services as it is. This is especially true for families of children who may be suffering from scoliosis, spina bífida or another long-term health condition which requires ongoing treatment. I know these revelations have also caused upset and concern for many healthcare workers as well.
“As a parent, there are few things more difficult than handing your child over to medical professionals for procedures which you know are required, but are likely to cause a level of suffering to your child. What makes it easier to do that is knowing your child is in the best and most caring of hands.
“Unfortunately, this review is telling us that standard has not been met in some circumstances. This is rightly giving parents cause for concern now.
“While I welcome the HSE have commissioned a nationwide review of paediatric orthopaedic services on foot of the first review, it is deeply troubling that such incidents have occurred in the first place.
"The Minister for Health must ensure full clarity and accountability in relation to this scandal. These reviews must be quick and published in full.
“There are serious questions to answer in relation to transparency, discipline, oversight and clinical governance.
“It is the responsibility of the HSE to ensure that families and children identified in the current review and wider national review are fully supported throughout the process and in dealing with any lasting complications.“
