The Leitrim Guardian Committee would like to announce that the 2024 recipients of the Person of the Year award are Breege and Michael Mulvihill.
They were nominated in recognition of their lifetime of service to their community. Together they have done some extraordinary things.
One such achievement is the raising of over €150,000 for the Leukaemia Trust through Sales of Christmas cards and running local events including an annual dance.
In 1999 Michael and Breege Mulvihill, from Glenfarne in North Leitrim lost their beloved son Seamus through leukaemia.
Seamus was treated in St James’s Hospital. Since December 2001 the Family with a huge team of friends within their community set about fundraising for a charity close to their hearts The Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust.
What started out initially as a cake sale developed into abundant fundraisers within the past 20 plus years.
Their fundraising efforts included, Christmas Card Sale, Car Wash, Sponsored walks, Christmas Day Swims, Head Shaving, Leg Waxing, Church Gate Collections, Tractor Parades, along with many more events.
They are actively involved in many events run in the Rainbow Centre and Breege and Michael help with catering for every local function.
They have been involved in the local Gala Festival for many years and have been part of a dedicated team which ensured that the festival ran smoothly.
They are involved in the local church and help out with all church activities.
Michael spent his working life employed with the local County Council and Breege worked as a nurse in Manorhamilton Hospital and Arus Breffni.
The local community who nominated them, feel that what makes them ideal candidates for the Leitrim Guardian Person of the Year award is that everything they do is done with a quiet dignity and without looking praise.
