A former Leitrim Village National School pupil, Liam Cox, is running the coastline of Ireland in aid of North West STOP.
His 2,500km journey started on August 26 at 6am, with Strandhill being Liam's first destination. He will continue clockwise around the coast of Ireland, aiming to finish back in Carrick on Shannon in early October.
Last Friday, September 29, Leitrim NS promoted the St Joseph's N.S. Jersey Day to raise funds to support the former pupil in his 60km/day journey across the coastline of Ireland.
Leitrim NS told the Leitrim Observer about the fundraising event: "We would like to thank the parents and pupils who raised €505 for such a worthy cause. A hero's welcome awaits Liam when he returns to Leitrim Village after a momentous journey of endurance and stamina".
Liam ran 12 marathons in 12 days over Christmas 2020 and, in his fundraising campaign page for the North West STOP's Sunrise 4 STOP event, said: "I am excited to be able to raise funds for Stop again. I believe their services are really important in our region and I am really passionate about doing my bit to help raise as much funds as we can".
Since starting to raise funds, the Leitrim NS former pupil achieved 90% of his initial goal with over 306 donors and €18,000 raised.
North West STOP is a voluntary community-based organisation that works to prevent suicide by informing, educating and promoting positive mental health free of charge for all ages.
