Cllr Paddy Farrell called on the council to "repair the "very dangerous access and pathways"
Cllr Paddy Farrell called on Leitrim County Council and Head of Finance, Mr. Vincent Dwyer, to allocate and find funding to repair the "very dangerous access and pathways leading to houses in St. Patrick’s Park, Breffni Heights and Breffni Cresent in Carrick-on-Shannon as they are in a very dangerous state"
He was advised at this month's meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon municipal district, that limited funding to specifically cover the essential repairs of substandard footpaths in taken in charge estates is currently being established. The section of footpath is currently closed on health and safety grounds but will be upgraded once this specific funding is available."
District engineer, Darragh O’Boyle said that he and Cllr Farrell, "did a bit of a walking exercise around the paths within Breffni Heights and Breffni Cresent and agreed to patch some of them and to clean others."
He said the mechanical sweeper damaged the path and it now "needs essential repairs" however, funding for repairs is not available currently so the 100m section of path has been closed.
He said when funding becomes available that "will be the first point of call because the paths were done 15 years ago as a temporary surface measure and now we need to re-establish new footpaths at Breffni."
Justin Fannon, acting director of services, said that "there is limited funding likely to come back to Leitrim County Council from IPB Insurance and we can use those funds to tackle the footpaths that have the greatest potential for public liability claims."
Mr Fannon said it is hoped that funding could become available within the next four to eight weeks.
Cllr Farrell noted that there are several elderly people living at the location and "there are several pathways that could do with funding so I'd ask that it was done as soon as possible."
