Tarrac - Declan Recks. Ireland, Irish Language, 2022
Classic Cinema session at The Dock presents the Irish language film ‘Tarrac’, winner of the Best Cinematography for an Irish Film at the 34th Galway Film Fleadh, on November 7 at 11.30am.
This 2022 Irish language film is set in the Kerry Gaeltacht and tells the tale of a young woman who returns home from the city to spend time with her Dad.
Tarrac means ‘to pull’ as Gaeilge, and this film is all about pulling together when times get tough in this intimate character-based drama set in the Kerry Gaeltacht. Workaholic Aoife Ní Bhraoin returns home to help her father, Breandán ‘The Bear’ Ó Braoin, recover from a heart attack.
Day-to-day, they get along fine, but as we dig a little deeper, we find out that there is much left unsaid about the loss of Aoife’s mother.
During her stay, Aoife reconnects with her home and old friends, getting involved again in Naomhóg or currach-racing. Eventually, she agrees to join the local team and strive to win the regional finals for their village, a feat not achieved in 22 years.
As Aoife’s past and present collide, she is pushed to her limits by the demanding training regimen, forcing her to confront her unresolved grief and the issues with her father.
Tarrac features an all-women rowing competition at the centre of the film, with the famous Naomhóg – a currach-like boat– one of the stars of this gutsy, beautiful film.
This film starts at 11.30am, and tickets cost €5, which includes a cuppa on arrival. If you would like to find out more or make a booking, you can call 071 9650828 or visit www.thedock.ie.
