Government admits housing targets are too low

Labour's Local Area Representative in Leitrim has condemned the Government's failure to act on housing. This comes following the Taoiseach's admission that housing targets are too low.

Bernie Linnane, Leitrim Labour Party Local Area Representative, told the Leitrim Observer that "the current Government targets are completely inadequate".

"We've known for some time that Government housing targets are much too low. Last month in the Dáil, in response to a question by Labour Leader Ivana Bacik TD, An Taoiseach said the Government will be publishing revised and increased housing targets early next year.

"The housing crisis consistently comes up on the doors in Dromahair and the rest of Leitrim and it impacts every community in the country. I'm hearing from people stuck in the rental trap, adults living in their childhood bedrooms, and families in emergency accommodation.

"The situation is dire and has been needlessly exacerbated by Government inaction.

"Labour is ambitious for housing. We believe the State can and must deliver 50,000 new builds and 50,000 refurbished homes per year for the next decade in order to meet the real level of housing need," she said.
