Drug driving figures up in Leitrim

Drug driver figures are up in Co Leitrim with numbers caught going from 29 last year to 41 this year to date, an increase of 29%. 

Chief Superintendent Aidan Glacken told the latest meeting of Leitrim Joint Policing Committee that "we have seen drink driving being replaced by drug driving."


Driving while intoxicated figures meanwhile decreased from 38 last year to 32 this year. 

In terms of mandatory intoxicant testing (MIT) checkpoints, there were 470. 

Public order offences decreased from 116 last year to 69 this year while drunkenness offences went from 68 to 61. 

Meanwhile, reported domestic violence incidents in the year to date decreased from 212 for the same period last year to 191 in 2023. 

There were 884 proactive patrols with 238 proactive checkpoints in Leitrim this year to date, it was revealed at a recent meeting. 


Cllr Enda McGloin said that there has been a significant increase in the arrests of drug drivers adding, "it goes to show you how the world is changing and evolving from alcohol to drug driving."
