Sometimes they have to wait three or four days before a body is released

Cllr Paddy Farrell

Cllr Paddy Farrell called on Leitrim County Council to call on the HSE to hire another Pathologist for Sligo University Hospital.
Cllr Farrell said, in some circumstances, where a sudden death has occurred, bereaved families can be waiting for two or three days before a post-mortem can be carried out.

He said there had been a "a lot sudden deaths in the area in the last year and it's very unfair on families who have loved ones, not to be able to make funeral arrangements; sometimes they have to wait three or four days before a body is released and I think there needs to be a pathologist on call at all times."

He called for the support of his fellow members with Cllr Sean McGowan lending his support to the motion, as well as Cllr Enda Stenson, who said "there are too long delays and it's upsetting so many people."

Cllr Des Guckian also supported the motion.
