SRC launch support opportunities for local families and businesses

For more than a decade, a dedicated team has been working on the development of a project  - The Shannonside Recreational Campus (SRC) which, on completion, will be a life-changing addition to Leitrim and the greater Shannonside region.

In response to expressed interest, the project team has launched a funding campaign presenting families and businesses the opportunity to contribute much needed financial support to this far reaching project.

The Shannonside Recreational Campus (SRC) will be an all-inclusive, sports and recreational campus serving the needs of the entire community of the wider Shannonside region. Whatever your background, level of ability, age or preferred activity, the SRC is for you.

The facility will address the extreme lack of quality sporting facilities in the region, which has seen athletes of all abilities from underage to national team standards, traveling outside the region to train and compete. It is without question nor challenge from local clubs, that such a facility is a necessity.

From unplayable pitches to the lack of a running track and adequate indoor facilities, our athletes and their clubs have been at a disadvantage for a long time. The SRC will ensure that those who wish to train and compete, or just stay active, can do so without compromise.

The ambitious plans for the facility include:

• 400m 8-lane tartan running track

• All weather full-sized pitch for GAA, rugby and soccer

• Outdoor grass pitch

• 2 indoor basketball courts,

• Hurling wall

• Indoor & outdoor changing rooms

• Indoor arena

• Car and bus parking

10 years in the making, the project is still at an early stage in the development but it is picking up speed.  Those who have recently traveled Carrick-on-Shannon’s Castlecarra Road (Aldi roundabout) will have seen that ground has been broken and groundworks are currently in progress.

Getting to this stage has been due to a lot of hard work and dedication, and a huge amount has already been achieved, but as with any project of this scale, finance is a key challenge. The SRC team have already secured over €1m in funding for Phase 1 and continue to explore opportunities and submit applications for further funding, but local community support is also required. To this end, two fundraising initiatives have been launched to allow local families and businesses to contribute and get the project over the line.

40 Founding Families

‘40 Founding Families’ is a legacy opportunity for families to write their names into the history of a facility which will be life-changing for future generations of locals. In return for a contribution of €10,000, families will have their names immortalised in a design feature of the campus. Donations have already come from individual families and also from siblings grouping together and donating as a collective, in memory of family members.

Founding Patrons

Similarly, the SRC team are seeking the support of businesses, who have the opportunity to become ‘Founding Patrons’ for a donation of €25,000. Founding Patrons, like the 40 Founding Families, will be recognised with their name in a feature of the finished campus design, and their contribution will go a long way towards ensuring the dreams of our athletes from 9 to 90 will materialise. 

As the Chair of the SRC Committee, Brendan Lowe, has stated ‘This campus is not for any one sport, club nor community, it is for the benefit of everyone’. 

These donations are far from insignificant. But, they present a rare opportunity to write your family or business name into local history and to leave a tangible legacy for future generations. By supporting the project, either through your family or business, everyone will benefit.
