Local election candidate for the Carrick-on-Shannon LEA Stephen King (Fianna Fáil) has expressed his disappointment that our county town has no sitting councillor residing in the town following last weekend's election count in The Landmark Hotel.
Before addressing that issue he acknowledged and paid tribute to retiring councillor from the town Finola Armstrong-McGuire for her work and representation as a councillor, Tidy Towns supporter and as a business person.
He continued, “We now find the town of Carrick without a councillor sitting in the council where we really need a voice and representation to promote and forward any concerns or issues that may arise for the next five years.
I believe when you live in an area and are on the ground this gives you a true feel for what is happening in that community and a sense of what the people's views and feelings are.”
Stephen continued, “This comes at a time when both Leitrim and Roscommon county councils are looking at the preparation of the Carrick-on-Shannon Joint Local Area Plan (JLAP) 2024-2030 and also the proposed building of a bypass of the town and we find ourselves without a representative from the town at the council table.”
This JLAP will include the Cortober area in Co Roscommon which King believes could be included in the Carrick electoral area as it too has no elected representative local to that area, and speaking to residents there they feel isolated, he said.
“So that leaves the town and its hinterland without a voice in what will be a time of significant change and development,” he said.
Stephen concluded, “A lot can happen in five years and bring quite a different affect to an area and I just wish we had a councillor that lives in the area day in day out to protect and represent the area to its fullest.”
THANK YOU
Stephen King would like to acknowledge and thank each and every person who put their faith in him by voting for him in the local election gone by.
“I wish to thank all who put their trust in me by voting for me on the day of the election, it has been a great honour to have been given that trust in the form of a vote but unfortunately I have come up short on this occasion.
“I want to thank all those who were involved in my campaign in any way. I want to thank my family, friends, neighbours for the wonderful support given to me over the past weeks, it's greatly appreciated.”
