CSO released a report titled 'Births and Deaths at Local Electoral Areas 2021'

Recent figures reveal that an area of Leitrim has earned the title of being Ireland's most fertile area. According to a new report from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), released on July 24 and titled 'Births and Deaths at Local Electoral Areas 2021,' Carrick-on-Shannon stands out with the highest fertility rates in the entire country.

Seán O’Connor, Statistician in the Life Events and Demography Division at the CSO said: "Today’s release, which is part of the CSO Frontier Series provides information and evidence on life events (births and deaths) at Local Electoral Area (LEA). It is the second publication in the series which examines life events at a local level."

The report found that in 2021, Carrick-on-Shannon saw 61.2 births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 49, followed by Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford at 60.8. The lowest fertility rate was in South-East Inner City, Dublin, with 29.8.

The report also states that of the 60,575 births that took place in 2021, North Inner City, Dublin was the local electoral area with the highest amount of births, at 755.

Despite Carrick-on-Shannon in Leitrim having the highest fertility rates in the country for 2021, Ballinamore had the lowest number of births in Ireland, with only 104 recorded. Manorhamilton followed closely with 117 births, placing both towns among the bottom three nationwide, alongside Belmullet, Co. Mayo, which had 112 births.

The fertility rate in Carrick-on-Shannon highlights a unique demographic landscape in Leitrim and the variation in birth rates within Leitrim highlights different local experiences and suggests a need to understand the factors driving these trends.
