Funding of €3 million has been granted for the development and upgrading of recreational facilities at Coillte Forest Parks across Ireland.

Leitrim will not see any capital works under this funding however, a total of €30,170 will be allocated for maintenance works in parks across the county.

Derrycarne Wood near Lough Boderg is set for a trail cleanup, to trim paths and perform general maintenance. In Rossinver, Fowley’s Falls will also see improvements, including strimming and path upkeep.

The iconic Glencar Waterfall will undergo maintenance to remove windblown trees, while Milltown Woods in Ballyglass, near Manorhamilton, will receive repairs and clearing of its trails.

Additionally, Glenfarne, Scardan Waterfalls and the Leitrim Way will benefit from general maintenance to enhance their amenities.

The most significant project will take place in Deerpark, County Cavan, where €200,000 has been allocated for the design and construction of a new car park.

The funding was announced on August 15 by the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD.

This investment is part of a partnership between the Department of Rural and Community Development and Coillte. Funding will be allocated towards walking trails, installation of footbridges, improved car parks and toilet facilities.

“Adventure tourism continues to go from strength to strength in Ireland,” said Minister Humphries.

“We have seen a huge surge in visitor numbers to our forest parks in recent years and I want to see that continue.

“I’m delighted that my department is working collaboratively with Coillte so that we can upgrade and improve the experience for our visitors,” Minister Humphries added.

Coillte manages over 440,000 hectares of forest and land, making it Ireland’s largest forest manager. It also offers the most outdoor recreation options in the country, with 260 forest recreational areas, twelve forest parks, and six mountain bike centres.
