This funding will go toward creating the Shannonside Peace Arena in Leitrim, which will feature a multi-sports pavilion and a full-size athletics track to meet the recreational needs of the community.
Earlier this year, a separate grant of €3.3M was also awarded to Leitrim county council from the PEACEPLUS programme which brings the total funding the county has received from the scheme this year to over €18M.
The PEACEPLUS programme is an initiative funded by the European Union, the Governments of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, as well as the Irish Government aimed at promoting peace by developing shared spaces in communities and areas that have been touched by conflict.
“This announcement of PEACEPLUS funding for County Leitrim is hugely significant. It is supporting a much-needed facility in our County,” said Cllr Paddy O’Rourke, Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council, while expressing his appreciation for the funding and acknowledging the dedicated efforts of the Shannonside Recreational Centre’s committee over the years.
The funding came as a result of an application that was submitted in 2023 by Leitrim County Council and the Shannonside Peace Arena for funding from the EU’s PEASEPLUS Programme.
This Shannonside recreational centre previously received a €1 million grant from the Department of Rural & Community Development, for groundwork and a grass pitch..
