The Leitrim Volunteer Awards lit up The Dock in Carrick-on-Shannon on Friday, 22 November 2024, celebrating the outstanding efforts of County Leitrim's volunteers. Acclaimed writer Michael Harding added his unique charm as special guest, making the evening a heartfelt tribute to the selfless heroes who make a difference every day.

Cora Molloy was been honored with the Volunteer of the Year – Social Inclusion award by the Leitrim Development Company for her outstanding contributions to the Ukrainian community in Leitrim. Through her innovative and engaging English language classes, Cora has helped Ukrainians, many of whom speak little or no English, to gain confidence and integrate into their new lives in Ireland.

Her teaching approach is unique, blending art and creativity to make learning fun and accessible. “I aim to take my students out of their comfort zones,” Cora explains, “because that’s how they truly learn and grow.” Her vibrant, interactive classes incorporate new words and expressions each week, fostering an environment where students feel empowered to communicate and connect.

Cora's commitment extends beyond teaching. She builds strong, personal relationships with her students, offering support with practical issues like housing and local services. As a result, many of her students have gained confidence in speaking English and some have even found employment locally. One notable success story is a pharmacist currently studying for an exam to practice in Ireland, a testament to the impact Cora’s classes have had.

Beyond the classroom, Cora has played a pivotal role in helping her students feel part of the wider community. By forming friendships with both students and their families, she has helped bridge cultural gaps and foster a sense of belonging in the area.

In addition to her teaching achievements, Cora has a fun fact that reflects her adventurous spirit—she has never driven a car and prefers getting around Leitrim on her beloved motorbike.

Cora’s recognition as Volunteer of the Year is a tribute to her dedication, not only in teaching English but in building a more inclusive, connected community for Ukrainians in Leitrim.
