Iarnród Éireann have filed for planning permission with Leitrim County Council for accessibility improvement works at Dromod train station.
The proposed development includes a mobility impaired access structure, designed to facilitate individuals with mobility impairments, within the curtilage of six protected structures.
The proposed structure is a mix of concrete and steel components, including a pair of staircases with two flights each and freestanding lift shafts for enhanced accessibility.
A walkway and support portals are also in the planning application.
The works would involve the removal of 10 parking spaces, the relocation of three designated parking bays and the provision of a new waiting shelter on platform two, a temporary haul road at construction stage and all ancillary other works.
Additionally, a wall on platform one would need to be repositioned to incorporate the mobility impaired access structure.
A Natura Impact Statement has been prepared and submitted. This document assesses the potential impacts of the development on nearby protected habitats and species to ensure environmental compliance under EU law.
These long-awaited works have been championed by Cllr Sean McGowan, who has actively advocated for their implementation during Council meetings and maintained ongoing communication with Iarnród Éireann.
A decision is due to be made by January 24 and provided planning is granted and work gets underway next year, it is hoped that the works could be completed in 2026.
