72% of Leitrim leaving certs went to third level in 2024

The average rate of Leaving cert students from Leitrim heading to university stagnates this year, though some schools in the county saw large increases in the percentage of their students who enrolled in third-level courses.

The Data, compiled by the Irish Independent, shows that the percentage of Leitrim leaving cert students who went onto third-level Education in 2024 remained the same as the previous year at 72%.

Ballinamore Community School and St Clares Comprehensive School in Manorhamilton both saw 95% of their students go on to third-level education, which was the highest rate of any school in the county.

ATU was by far the most popular destination for those graduating from Leitrim secondary schools with the University of Galway and UCD also attracting significant numbers.

A number of schools in the county saw a significant increase in the number of students heading for university this year compared to 2023 with Ballinamore Community School and St Clares Comprehensive School in Manorhamilton both seeing an increase of over 20%. Meanwhile, schools like Mohill Community College and Drumshanbo Vocational School saw decreases.

The data did not include the number of students who went on to do other further education like PLC courses, and likewise, the numbers doing internships, or apprenticeships were not included.
