Breffni players bring Hollywood meets Shakespeare comedy to the dock

Comedy hit brings big laughs to Carrick-on-Shannon stage

Breffni players bring Hollywood meets Shakespeare comedy to the dock

Carrick-on-Shannon’s much-loved theatre troupe, The Breffni Players, are back at The Dock this November with the hilarious comedy A Bunch of Amateurs by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman.

Running from 25th to 28th November 2025, this feel-good production promises an unforgettable night of laughter, showcasing a mix of new talent alongside familiar Breffni faces — all supported by a dedicated production team working hard behind the scenes.

The play follows Jefferson Steele, a fading Hollywood action hero who believes he’s heading to a glamorous Shakespearean festival — only to end up in a sleepy Suffolk village with a group of enthusiastic amateurs determined to stage King Lear. What follows is a riot of egos, misunderstandings, and laugh-out-loud moments that celebrate everything great about community theatre.

Director Sinéad Quinn said: “We’ve got such a wonderful bunch involved in this play about a bunch of amateurs — a mix of familiar faces and brilliant new talent who joined us after holding open auditions back in September. The play itself is really a celebration of community spirit — and that’s exactly what The Breffni Players are all about. It’s a laugh-a-minute comedy with razor-sharp wit, where Shakespeare meets Hollywood and the world of amateur dramatics collides in the most hilarious way.”

The talented cast and crew bringing this production to life include Anne Marie Staunton, Odette Lynch, Saoirse Gibbons, Aoife Roddy, Michael McLoughlin, Martin Branagan, Saul Flynn, Annetha Kieran, Shane Loftus, Julie Lombard, Gary Quinn, Rachel Doyle, Eithne Tansey, Emma de Faoite, Catriona Glancy O'Shea, David Lawlor, Autumn Wood, Olivia McHugh, Nuala Branagan, Mia Branagan, Marta Quinn, Mahon Meldrum and Chelcy Sharkey.

A Bunch of Amateurs is produced by The Breffni Players, by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French. Tickets are already on sale and expected to move fast. To book, visit www.thedock.ie
