Celebrate 50 years of surfing in Ireland

Current Irish National Surf Champion Gearoid McDaid from Strandhill, County Sligo

The Irish Surfing Association celebrates the introduction of surfing to Ireland 50 years ago this weekend.

A number of events are planned for this 50th Anniversary Celebration which will coincide with the Irish Inter County Surfing Championships taking place in Rossnowlagh, Co. Donegal on 14th – 16th October.

In 1966 the Surf Club Of Ireland was formed as a result of a chain of events initiated by Bray man, Kevin Cavey. Kevin discovered surfing in 1962, when he saw a picture of a Hawaiian surfer in a Reader’s Digest.
In the years that followed, the Irish Surfing Association was the catalyst for the hosting of European Surfing Championships in 1972 (Lahinch), 1985 (Rossnowlagh), 1997 (Bundoran) and 2011 (Bundoran).

On Saturday 15 there will be intercounty heats, dinner and ball. Sunday 16 will see intercounty finals and presentations.

Information on the 50th Anniversary Celebration is available at or contact Fin McCool Surf Shop, Rossnowlagh, Tel (071) 9859020.
