Carrick-on-Shannon Darkness Into Light this Saturday

Darkness Into Light, Pieta House’s flagship awareness 5K walk/run – will take place in Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday, May 12 at 4.15am.

This year sees Carrick-on-Shannon hold this event for the 5th year. Last year €40,151.36 was raised for Pieta House West, which is based in Tuam. This consisted of donations, registration fees and sponsorship.

Last year Carrick-on-Shannon Darkness Into Light presented a cheque for €40,151.36 to Pieta House. Back row: Jim Glancy, Marcella Beirne,  Matilda Fallon, Bernadette Glancy, Breda Maguire, Tom McEroy, Donna Burke and Finola Armstrong-McGuire. Front row: Ann Rynn and Cora Nevin.

It costs approximately €1,000 for a person to go through the Pieta counselling system, so the money raised in Carrick-on-Shannon last year would have assisted 40 people.

The local committee consists of chairperson (Event Director) Cora Nevin, secretary Bernadette Glancy, and Jim Glancy is the treasurer. Breda McGuire is looking after facebook and social media. Marcella Beirne and Tom Glancy are assisting on the committee in the area of registration and promotion of the event. Matilda Fallon has responsibility for catering, while Siobhán Oates has charge of registration.

They are extremely grateful to the other volunteers who are assisting with registration. The Magnet has come on board again this year, acting as a place where you can complete registration. Thanks to Finóla, Theresa and Marie for all the support and promotion.

Once again this year the committee are very fortunate to have the use of the Community School. Thanks to Mr. Adrian Jackson (Principal) and Mr. Paul Byrne (Deputy Principal) for all their support.

“We are very grateful to all the businesses in the county and surrounding regions for their support and help with this superb community event. We have had people contact us from all parts of the local region and county advising that they will be taking part. SuperValu and Glancy’s Bar are superb supporters and sponsors of this event,” said Cora Nevin.

“We would appreciate if people registered online at We have registration taking place up to this Friday, May 11 in The Magnet, Main Street from 10am – 6pm.

Glass Jars
The committee would be grateful if anyone has any spare, clean glass jars, would you drop them into Glancy’s Bar.

The Route
DIL Carrick-on-Shannon takes in a flat lit up route for the first 2.5K, heading out the Castlecara Road while the second half is an uphill walk via Summerhill, continuing around by Kelly’s Foodstore and returning via the Tesco roundabout. Start and finish at Sports Complex beside Aura.

The event begins in the darkness at 4.15am and concludes as dawn is breaking – hence the Darkness Into Light name. People can choose to run or walk. There will be light refreshments available on completion of the event, kindly sponsored by Supervalu and Glancy’s Bar.
