Exciting second chance education opportunities announced for young people in Leitrim

On Wednesday, 9th May, Mayo, Sligo & Leitrim Education & Training Board along with their Chief Executive Mr. Shaun Purcell and the Director of Further Education & Training Mr. Peter Egan  announced the establishment of a Youthreach second chance education and training centre for young people in Co. Leitrim.

Speaking at the event, Peter Egan, of MSLETB said “Following the submission of a proposal from MSLETB, the Department Of Education & Skills through SOLAS have given sanction to the establishment of a Youthreach Centre with funding for a 25 place programme to be located at the old vocational school in Mohill, Co Leitrim”.

Speaking at the event Cllr. Enda Stenson said “this is an incredible win for Co. Leitrim and for Mohill. The new Youthreach will provide much needed training and development opportunities for our young people. There is also an opportunity to link and integrate the training and development with plans to turn Mohill into a smart green town.”

The Youthreach programme which operates throughout Ireland is a Department of Education & Skills official education, training and work experience programme for early school leavers aged 16 – 20.

It offers young people the opportunity to identify options within adult life and provides them with opportunities to acquire certification and to prepare young people to progress to further education/training or to employment. It operates on a full-time, year-round basis.

Heretofore early school leavers in Co Leitrim were at a disadvantage as Leitrim was the only county in Ireland that did not have a Youthreach provision.

MSLETB will now operate a 25 place Centre in their existing vacant premises in Mohill which will be refurbished and updated to suit the needs of a modern centre for education.

The programme will provide early school leavers with the opportunity to gain work experience, achieve certification from levels 1 – 5 on the national framework of qualifications, allowing them to progress to further education and training, higher education or employment.

Mayo, Sligo & Leitrim ETB is the main provider of a wide range of Educational Services across counties Mayo. Sligo and Leitrim including Post Primary Education, Post Leaving Cert Courses (PLC’s), Vocational Training Opportunities Schemes (VTOS), Youthreach, Youth Services, Outdoor Education, Training Centre’s, Music Generation, Adult Education and Adult Guidance Services.
